Chains stretch, for sure. A tension tool like this will show the wear, and you can find out about tensioners at Charlie the Bikemonger - the tugs / tensioners are toward the bottom of the page.

Ah-ha - so that's what was wrong with my 305! Garmin replaced though, no trouble. I confess for a fondness for paper maps, and since finding these on the Dunwich Dynamo, they are my favourite touring maps, with a map carrier velcroed to the bars.
Cheers for all your input, I live and ride in the Frence Pyrenees and there are lots of small car less roads to find so hope a Garmin will help me out.
