Nice one. Intervals will get you fit. I did the 55 miler off of regular 2 hr rides and no intervals. I think getting out reasonably often will get you there. I fancy the jodrel bank sportive. They have a couple of distances

Hi Christina, there is a great book. Called 'The Time-Crunched Cyclist' by Chris Carmichael (Lances personal coach). It is specifically for time limited training. I thoroughly recommend it. It will definitely build your fitness on 5 - 6 hrs per week…

What bikes do you own?
Specialized Roubaix & Specialized Rock Hopper
A few words about yourself...
Practising Specialist Sports Injuries & Musculskeletal Physiotherapist. Have my own private practice www.pro-physio.co.uk nr Winchester, Hampshire, and also contract out to NHS as Extended Scope Practitioner for a couple of days a week.

Have just found cycling again after a lonnnnngggg break. Used to cycle daily 26 miles commute in Germany. But did no touring/weekend rides. Now, really enjoying getting back into it. Still find hills hard (Mind you I'm a bit more lardy thank I used to be)! Just had a couple of recent set backs! I had both knees arthoscoped in October 09, and the next morning suffered a stroke (spent a week in hospital). Fortunately I have no significant residual deficits, but it has seriously curtailed my cycling (as has the recent weather). Recently invested in a home Turbo Trainer, and with some downloaded interval training aids from Sufferfest.com, have enoyed training in all weathers! Recently got a Garmin Edge for Christmas - wow what a tool. Get one!!!

Wearing of Cycle Helmets. For & Against

I thought i'd throw this out to the floor. I know certain people's attitudes to cycle helmets, but I wondered whether the majority wear, or do not wear cycle helmets. Here is a short conclusion from a scientific paper.

Helmets provide a 63%-88% reduction in the risk of head, brain and severe brain injury for all ages of bicyclists. Helmets provide equal levels of protection for crashes involving motor vehicles (69%) and crashes from all other causes (68%). Injuries to the upper and mid facial a… Continue

TENDONITIS (Copied from http://pro-physio.co.uk/Documents/Tendonitis.docx)

Tendonitis
Introduction
Tendonitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Tendons are the tough, white, stringy and rubbery (fibrous) cords that link muscles to bones. They help to release the power created by a muscle contraction, which helps move the bones and joints. For example, the tendons that you can see on the back of your hands move your fingers and are joined to the muscles in the forearm.
Some tendons are covered with a protective and lubricating sheath of tissues, called the syno… Continue

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, or Runners Knee

Runners Knee is also called Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome or Anterior Knee Pain Syndrome.

Runners Knee is one of the most common causes of knee pain in all age groups, including teens and young adults.

It can be chronic or intermittent. It is common in runners, hence the term "runners knee", but also occurs in inactive people.

Runners Knee is a condition characterized by pain behind or around the kneecap. Poor kneecap tracking is belie

oh no, I hope the wild edric is not closed - this year's details are not yet up on the website here though, so still hoping. maybe I'll have to do the evans ride-it ride in the lake district in september instead - DH can pull the kids round in the trailer, although for some reason he's not keen on that idea, as it's round Coniston way!!

sounds a lovely bike!! I do like my specialized, guess my mate is going to enjoy his roubaix then. he's got a 30 mile road trip round Snowdon planned for us in August, so at least I have something to aim for!! My husband will get to babysit the kids - LOL!!! I need to give my bike a clean tomorrow though, the roads round here are sooo muddy and I'm ashamed to say, I forgot to clean it last time out!

Mate, just looked at your route. Can't believe that you ride the Morestead road! Rode today with a mate form the village and we used Hensting lane as well but took the 2nd hill to Owslebury and then rode along the Baybridge road to Upham. Very cold out there again. Hope you're keeping well - see you must have been pushing on the hills maxing out at 169bpm.

You should have turned left before the church that would have saved you having to ride up salt lane to the milburys. Long slow drag up to the top isn't it? You could have gone up hensting lane to oswlbury, there is a cracking hill that way, one of only 2 places where i really needed to stop pedalling but was going too slow to unclip so had to keep going!

Ah-ha - so that's what was wrong with my 305! Garmin replaced though, no trouble. I confess for a fondness for paper maps, and since finding these on the Dunwich Dynamo, they are my favourite touring maps, with a map carrier velcroed to the bars.
