Martyn

My mistress is older than my missus!(with photo's)!

So the truth is out, I've been seen around town with my mistress, and as you can see by the pic's, she's a looker for her years. Hang on a minute, don't get the wrong idea here, by my mistress I mean my newly acquired peugeot retro racer, my mrs. being my dear rockhopper of 10 yrs age.
In all seriousness though, I'm impressed with my 1980 peugeot racer, which has delighted me over the last couple of weeks. For a minimal outlay I purchased this bike as a "maybe" fixed project, but as I am enjoying her so much I've decided to keep "as is" for a while, especially since my usual ride is in dock due to a collision.
My preconceptions about changing to a racer have been quashed, she rides wonderfully, gives me higher average speeds even though I feel like I'm giving the same riding effort. The ride is, if anything, more cushioned than my old mountain frame, ( maybe frame gives more flex?),and the 10 speed gears, now I'm getting more used to the downtube shifters, are a delight.I have fitted my specialized avatar saddle, and a £6 tesco computer, all I need now are some of those short alloy retro mudguards. (If anyone has any I'll buy them).Anyone who is thinking of changing from a mountain bike to a road bike, have no worries, it's all good.
Cheers, Martyn.

Super bikes Martyn. A steel road frame really does soak up the lumps and bumps and is such a joy to ride. There's not a lot to match it really.

Alloy mudguards are getting tougher to find. ESGE were around in the '80s but are also tough to find. The latest narrow versions by SKS are, I believe, excellent and very similar to ESGE. They're not metal but are extremely durable. If I see any alloys, I'll let you know. Might be an idea to look for another bike with them on. Nothing like another bike to the collection!

IME the kids don't give a toss about what they ride. It's the ' wanting the best' parents that buy the bike, and then wonder why it lies abandoned, unloved, and broke, propped alongside the garage, rusting away. It was unfit for purpose!
